Internet Explorer 7 users to be taxed for shopping online with old browser - Metro.co.uk
Kogan is charging people using Internet Explorer 7 6.8 per cent per transaction – 0.1 per cent for each month since its 2006 launch.
‘This is necessary due to the amount of time required to make web pages appear correctly in IE7,’ a pop-up message on the Australian-based site says.
The company’s chief executive, Ruslan Kogan, said: ‘Internet Explorer 7 has long since passed its use-by date.
‘It’s a constant source of frustration for our web guys and we’re sick of burning cash on a browser that hit the market nearly six years ago.
‘It’s not only costing us a huge amount, it’s affecting any business with an online presence, and costing the internet economy millions of dollars.’
The move has gone down well on Twitter with one user saying: ‘I salute your initiative against IE7. Can you please be president of The Internet?’
Kogan’s British website is exempt from the ‘tax’, which is widely regarded as a gimmick.
There have been significant updates to IE7 software in recent years and the latest version, Internet Explorer 10, is due to arrive this autumn.
